If you’re experiencing severe urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, and medications or other procedures haven’t provided relief, robotic simple prostatectomy may be the solution.
At Urology Partners of North Texas (UPNT), our board-certified and board-eligible urologists perform robotic-assisted prostate surgery using advanced technology designed to improve outcomes. This approach offers greater precision, faster recovery, and long-term symptom relief for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
What Is a Robotic Simple Prostatectomy?
A simple prostatectomy removes the inner part of the prostate that’s causing a blockage while preserving the outer capsule. Using the da Vinci® Surgical System, our surgeons operate through small incisions, giving patients faster healing and better precision than traditional open surgery.

How It Works:
- Tiny robotic instruments are inserted through small incisions
- Obstructing prostate tissue is carefully removed to restore normal urine flow
- A temporary catheter is placed to support bladder healing
- The outer capsule of the prostate is preserved to seduce bleeding and aid recovery.
- The nerves responsible for erectile function are typically not affected
- However, retrograde ejaculation — where semen goes into the bladder instead of out through the penis — is a common and expected side effect

Who Is a Candidate for the Robotic Simple Prostatectomy?
- To be a candidate for the robotic simple prostatectomy, you must have an enlarged prostate over 80 grams.
- This size threshold is essential to determine if the procedure is right for you.
- The robotic simple prostatectomy is typically recommended for men who:
- Are living with severe urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate
- Experience urinary retention or require long-term catheter use
- Have failed other BPH treatments such as UroLift®, Rezum™, PAE, or medications
- Show signs of bladder dysfunction from prolonged obstruction
- Very large prostates (typically over 100–150 grams)
- Long-term urinary retention or dependence on a catheter
- Failed other BPH treatments such as UroLift®, Rezūm™, or medications
- Bladder dysfunction from chronic obstruction
For most men with very large prostates, other minimally invasive procedures are not effective. However, PAE or Aquablation may be options for select patients with moderately enlarged prostates (<150g).
