What Is a Cystoscopy?

A cystoscopy is a quick, in-office procedure that lets your UPNT doctor examine the inside of your bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera (a cystoscope).

Important: Be Prepared to Provide a Urine Sample

Before your cystoscopy, you will be asked to leave a urine sample at UPNT. This is to check for signs of infection, which could require rescheduling the procedure to prevent complications. If an infection is found, your doctor will discuss the next steps, such as antibiotics and rescheduling.

Why Might You Need a Cystoscopy?

Your UPNT urologist may recommend this procedure to:
  • Investigate urinary symptoms (burning, urgency, frequent urination)
  • Check for bladder stones, tumors, or signs of bladder cancer
  • Find the cause of blood in the urine (hematuria)

What to Expect During a Cystoscopy at UPNT

This quick, outpatient procedure is performed right in our UPNT office and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1

Check-In & Urine Sample

  • Be prepared to provide a urine sample before your cystoscopy.

Step 2

Preparation

  • You’ll lie comfortably on the exam table.
  • A numbing gel is applied to your urethra to minimize discomfort.
  • No sedation is needed for most patients, but it’s available if necessary.

Step 3

Insertion of the Cystoscope

  • A thin, flexible tube is gently passed through the urethra into the bladder.

Bladder Expansion with Sterile Water

  • Sterile water (or saline) is gently injected through the cystoscope into the bladder.
  • This expands the bladder, allowing your doctor to clearly examine the bladder walls.
  • You may feel a full or urgent sensation, but this is normal.

Step 5

Bladder Examination

  • Your UPNT doctor will carefully check for any abnormalities, such as inflammation, stones, or tumors.
  • If anything unusual is found, we may recommend a repeat cystoscopy and a biopsy at a later date in a surgery center or hospital for further evaluation.

Step 6

Completion

  • The sterile water is drained, and the cystoscope is removed.
  • You’ll be able to empty your bladder normally afterward.

Does a Cystoscopy Hurt?

  • You may feel pressure, mild burning, or the urge to urinate during the procedure.
  • The numbing gel helps minimize discomfort.
  • If sedation is used, you won’t feel anything at all.

What to Expect After Your Cystoscopy

Most patients recover quickly, but here’s what you might notice afterward:
  • Mild burning or discomfort when urinating (this should improve within a day)
  • Slight blood in urine (a little pink color is normal)
  • More frequent urination for a few hours
  • Drink plenty of water to help flush out any irritation
  • Most people return to normal activities within 24 hours
  • Call your UPNT doctor immediately if you experience:
  • Severe pain that doesn’t improve
  • Fever or chills (possible sign of infection)
  • Heavy bleeding or difficulty urinating

Are There Any Risks?

Cystoscopy is very safe, but like any procedure, there are small risks, including:
  • Mild bleeding (usually resolves on its own)
  • Temporary urinary discomfort
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) (your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to prevent this)
