Why is it important?

PSMA PET/CT scans can often detect areas of prostate cancer that may not be visible with conventional CT scans or bone scans. This additional information can help your physician:

Determine whether prostate cancer is confined to the prostate or has spread.
Detect recurrent prostate cancer when the PSA begins to rise after treatment.
Identify small areas of disease that may not be visible with standard imaging.
Guide decisions about surgery, radiation therapy, or other treatments.
Develop a more personalized treatment plan.

What Should I Expect During the Scan?

A PSMA PET/CT scan is performed as an outpatient procedure, and most patients find the experience simple and straightforward.

Check In

Our staff will review your information and answer any questions before the study begins.

Tracer Injection

A small amount of the PSMA tracer is administered through an IV.

Waiting Period

You will relax comfortably while the tracer circulates through your body for one hour.

The Scan

You will lie on the scanning table while images are obtained. The scan itself is painless and typically takes 20-30 minutes. .

After the Scan

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward.

Receiving Your Results

After your scan is completed, the images are reviewed and a detailed report is prepared.

For UPNT Patients

Your scan results become part of your overall prostate cancer care plan. Your treating physician will review the findings with you and discuss how they may affect treatment recommendations.

For Patients Referred by Other Physicians

We welcome referrals from urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and other physicians throughout Texas and beyond.

Once your scan is complete, a detailed report is promptly sent to the physician who ordered the study. Your physician will review the results with you and discuss any recommended next steps.

Why Is PSMA PET/CT Different?

Traditional CT scans and bone scans primarily look for physical changes in the body. PSMA PET/CT works differently by identifying prostate cancer cells based on a protein found on their surface.

Because of this, PSMA PET/CT scans can often find small areas of prostate cancer that may not be visible with conventional imaging.

PSMA PET/CT scans may help:

Improve the accuracy of prostate cancer staging.
Detect recurrence earlier after treatment.
Identify small lymph node or bone metastases.
