For nearly two decades, Dr. Bevan-Thomas has been helping men overcome prostate cancer.

“Knowing that I can make a difference in their lives makes me want to go to work each day,” he says. “It’s scary when you get diagnosed with cancer. Understanding makes a huge difference, so I begin by telling each man the entire story about prostate cancer, then I individualize it so it becomes a story about his cancer. I’m not here to whisk men off to surgery. I’m here to help them understand their prostate cancer and treatment options. When a man walks out my door, I want him to know he has a game plan—whether he has terrible cancer or low-grade cancer. I think that gives men a lot of peace of mind.”

One of the first physicians to perform robotic surgery when it was introduced in the United States in 2002, Dr. Bevan-Thomas remains one of the nation’s most experienced surgeons in minimally invasive robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy using the da Vinci® Surgical System. As a founder of Urology Partners, he is committed to providing exceptional patient care and surgical outcomes.

He worries when he hears media reports that misrepresent the nature of prostate cancer or discourage screening. “Knowledge is power,” Dr. Bevan-Thomas says. “It concerns me when news outlets say, ‘Don’t get your PSA drawn’ and ‘Nobody dies of prostate cancer.’ It’s an unfortunate statistic, but roughly 28,000 men die from prostate cancer every year. I’ve had many patients die from prostate cancer—patients who didn’t come to me early enough, and that’s heart-wrenching. Those are the ones I lose sleep over. But on the flip side, I’ve had men come in who’ve had low PSAs and said, ‘My doctor told me not to worry about a PSA test, but I’ve decided to get one,’ and we found that they had a higher-grade prostate cancer. Those are the guys who realized they needed to take their health into their own hands and our team was able to cure them from a lethal disease.”

Fondly known as Dr. BT to his patients and their families, Dr. Bevan-Thomas credits his lifelong love for science and medicine to his physician parents, an orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist. A graduate of Duke University, he completed both his master’s in anatomy preparatory program and medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in urologic surgery at the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center and renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. He’s been honored with the prestigious Pfizer Scholar in Urology and Gerald G. Murphy Scholar in Urology awards.

When he’s not caring for his patients, Dr. Bevan-Thomas plays jazz piano and competes and teaches Brazilian in Jiu-Jitsu. He lives in Southlake with his wife and three children.
